Bad blogger! Bad!!!

I've been reduced to chastizing myself because I have been very bad of late on doing recent and relevant posts. I'm not like some of my other great guilty pleasure sites like "Just Jared" or "Perez Hilton". But then again, I don't have great big juicy scoops about all those Hollywood celebs (and non-celebs) that keep people clamoring back for more (people like me) Probably because I live nowhere near Hollywood, and have no contact with people who know anyone even remotely rich and famous.. So anyway, go ahead and go visit those sites I've just mentioned. Just to forewarn you, these sites may, at times, not be for the morally chaste, so you better cinch up those corsets.

You

We passed
Shared a glance
Perhaps by chance
It was all I could do
To not think of love
For we were destined
To never meet again
So I tried my best
To sear an image of you
But the moment is fleeting
The memory fades
And I am left
Alone again.

I wish I could quit you...

Heath and Jake in love!Hey everyone. Just a "head's up" to tell you all that Brokeback Mountain will be available on DVD on April 4th. It's not up for preorder yet at the usually suspect places (Amazon.com, et al). But you can pre-order it from TLA Video, my new favorite on-line DVD store. They seem to have everything from mainstream to any genre you can think of. Even more so than Amazon.com. And if you spend $150 or more there now, they'll send you Brokeback Mountain for free! Just don't let me catch you wandering their "mature" section. And by that, I don't mean their exapnsive collection of Merchant Ivory films.

Gotta love Chloe

I just gotta congratulate Chloe Dao for winning Project Runway season 2. My sister did not believe in you, and called most of your final runway stuff fugly. But at least: 1. Your clothes fit the models and 2. They looked professionally done and finished.

Actually, before I saw the finale, when my sister was describing what all three finalists did at Olympus Fashion Week (and from my readings in a preview in the Seattle Times), I was thinking Santino might win, without looking at the fashions going down the runway.

Boob Flap alert!Daniel's going GeishaWhen Daniel Vosivic’s collection came out, I was at first saddened by the tragedy of the “boob flaps” seen on some of his dresses. I’m sure that they could be ignored in the print media, but when the models were going down the runway, they were all I could stare at. That and the unfortunate little tumble that his last model suffered, because the bottom of the dress didn’t know where it wanted to go. I think his best and most sophisticated look was a kimono sweater look that suffered from an alienesque looking Asian model.

Santino's parachute sleevesSantino emulates Forever 21Santino, as much as I hate to like him, played it WAAAAYYYYYY too safe for the finale. It didn’t even look like a line created by him. I think that he wanted to win so bad that he stifled his creativity and just churned out pretty dresses that looks like half the things you can buy at Forever 21. Well, except for that leather corset with puffy sleeves fiasco. What was up with that? Actually, that was what I was expecting from Santino.

Gahh! Pockets!!!Chloe channeling Goldfrapp? And then there’s Chloe. I do admit that there were some points of contention with some of her choices. She really overdid the shawl/jacket thing by doing too many, and then using the exact same fabric as the main dress. It got a little repetitive. But the fabrics that she used were great, and she did flex some creative muscle, creating outfits that fit the body, and had drama and personality. Granted, poofy sleeves aren’t for everyone (but I can really see many of those outfits on Allison Goldfrapp), but then again, neither is most of what haute couture puts out (not everyone can pull off Alexander McQueen or John Galliano). Her worst dress though was that 13th outfit, that was worked on by her and Diana. The baby doll thing is overdone, and adding pockets to it on top of that? Travesty! Pockets are meant for pants only; please do not put them on formal dresses. But then again, Debra Messing (Grace of Will & Grace) did like it. It’s very "Grace," a touch of ugly mixed with a splash of laziness by not having to carry a purse, since you have a pocket to hide your wallet in now.
Anyway, I’m glad a woman won the second season, as there is not enough female designers out there (Donatella Versace doesn’t count, as I still think she might have been a man before). And a minority Asian too! Her mother would be so proud. Well, after having no belief in her little “playing with fabric” phase when she was younger.

One last thing, could the models be any less appealing? For some strange reason, almost every model this season was either bony looking, didn’t know how to walk properly, or just generally looked like an alien on the verge of death. Tim Gunn was right when he described one model as looking like “an elongated marshmallow”. God I love Tim Gunn.

choitoy's Note: I finally got the pictures to show up, but they are a little humungoid! Again, I'll work on this tomorrow after a full night of sleep.

Super...nature

I just got into Goldfrapp recently (it's kinda strange that I didn't get into them sooner). So I'm as happy as a clam that their brilliant album, Supernature, came out in the U. S. finally (the U.K. shouldn't be the only ones to get all the fun!)

Anyway, for those that aren't in the know, they are this duo/group from England that create this dark, surreal disco music. Well, actually, the disco thing kinda came about recently, as their first album, Felt Mountain, was more ethereal electronica, without the strong backbeat. Still good stuff, but I enjoy their newer stuff a bit better (but that's just me). This album is what Blondie should have sounded like when she made her "comeback" with "Maria". Now don't get me wrong, "Maria" was a perfectly fine song by Blondie standards, but a little too retro without any sign of artistic growth. Goldfrapp captures disco infused punk Blondie with a modern yet retro twist perfectly.

"Ooh La La", their first single, took Europe by storm when it came out so many eons ago. It has this cool redux of "Spirit in the Sky," with a dark and threatening backbeat. The video (directed by Dawn Shadforth of Kylie "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" Minogue fame) is very slick also, and is included in the limited edition release of the Supernature CD/DVD combo. Basically Allison Goldfrapp is a lovely chanteuse in black, backed by a "The Darkness" meets "Ziggy Stardust" cover-band. But the kicker is when she rides across the screen, with white silk taffeta flowing, on a disco ball mirrored horse. It's cool.

Also to be checked out is their most recent single (at least in Europe), "Ride A White Horse." Cool beyond belief. And the album ends with a great cooldown song, "Number 1," and the bonus track (previously released on the "Number 1 EP"), "Beautiful". Her voice can easily go between near growl as on "Ooh La La" to a beautiful siren of the seas on the latter track.

So, if you have a hankering to dance to something a little bit darker than all the usual Euro-pop fare, check out Supernature. Their last album, Black Cherry, is excellent also, and serves as a good transition between their earlier sound and the new album.
